Hello!

My name is Gianna and I am a student on the Sebago Team at SMS. Sebago’s way of learning is a bit different from other learning styles. Sebago students enjoy a more project based learning style that is very hands on. This year we have been going every week to three trails in the community; the Saco Heath, Horton Woods, and Atlantic Way. Each trail has been inspected, researched, and explored thoroughly. The Saco Heath is a beautiful preserved journey across over 1,200 acres of raised coalesced bog and forest. Students have found interesting animals and plants, like the purple pitcher plant and Hessel’s Hairstreak Butterfly, and enjoy going there every week. Horton Woods is a joyous and pleasant walk through the woods, with the oldest maple tree in Saco! Students have looked forward to testing the water in the stream that runs near the maple tree. Atlantic Way is marvelous stroll through a marshy wonderland. Students are fond of the quiet setting and have enjoyed having a place for peace and tranquility.

As a team we believe that learning about our community and world is important knowledge to have. It is important to know what is happening in the natural world around us, because it affects us. Every impact to Saco’s ecosystem is an impact on us as well. This brings us to our huge project for the year. We would like to conserve an eight acre piece of alluring land right next to two properties that the Saco Valley Land Trust owns. One of the perks of owning this land is that it will help make a longer wildlife corridor and trail where (hopefully, eventually) we can connect from Saco all the way to Gorham, though there are still some gaps where roads flow through. If we conserved this land it would make it possible for all the majestic animals of Maine to travel through the woods with no fear of getting hit by a car (and for humans to enjoy open spaces too!)

Saco’s community has grown greatly throughout my lifetime. This is a good thing, don’t get me wrong, but there are negative aspects to this that many have overlooked. As our city becomes bigger and bigger our natural land gets smaller and smaller. Our natural land is important! Believe it or not humans aren’t the only living things that are critical. Endangered species and plants live here with us. With the help of Saco and Biddeford Savings Bank, there is a dedicated account to make donations to, big and small. You can help by donating any amount of money to this account. We hope that you will open up your heart and donate! Please contact us with any questions as we would be happy to tell you more about the project.

Sincerely,
Gianna and Sebago 7 (and Mr. Andrew Fersch, teacher: afersch@sacoschools.org)
